Inspired by Donna Haraway's Cyborg Manifesto, Spiral Dance explores what it means to have control and to be controlled. Two scientists create an android to help them harness a strange energy they encounter; however, when the android gets too close to the energy source, things don't go exactly as planned.
All of the projected visuals in the piece were coded using Max, Jitter, and OpenGL. The rainbow oscilloscope was an original creation and the black and white noise was modified from code found on the r/MaxMSP subreddit. We built an accelerometer that could control the displacement of the black and white noise that was hooked up to the android's arm. All other aspects of the performance (audio and visual) were being controlled by hand.
The above performance is a cell phone recording of our final run through before the final. High definition video is soon to follow.
